The story, without spoilers

Vivienne Michel, a young woman travelling through North America, takes a temporary job minding a roadside motel in the Adirondack mountains of New York State. With the owners away, she is alone when two threatening men arrive.

The first part of the book is her account of her life so far, including relationships that went badly. Bond turns up later as another traveller. The danger is small-scale and close: a locked building, uncertain motives and no one to call for help.

Can I start here?

Not ideally. It works best once you know what a normal Bond book is like, because the point is how different this one is. It is short, though.

What stands out

Fleming deliberately changed the voice and scale here. There are no casinos or secret bases, and the reader sees danger through someone with no training at all.
