The head of Britain's intelligence station in Jamaica has stopped reporting in. Bond is sent to look into what seems a routine disappearance, and the local clues keep pointing at Crab Key, an island its owner protects with remarkable care.

Bond calls on Quarrel, a boatman who knows these waters well. Honeychile Rider, an independent beachcomber, has her own reasons for being near the island. The story moves from a standard inquiry into something stranger, built on isolation, the natural world and an opponent with vast resources.

Can I start here?

Yes, and many readers do, because the first Bond film was based on it. It follows on from From Russia with Love, so reading that first adds context.

What stands out

The Jamaican setting drives the atmosphere, and the book is a useful comparison with the film that launched the screen series in 1962.
