Goldfinger

The story, without spoilers

Bond first crosses paths with Goldfinger over a game, and the man plainly likes to control both the cards and the people around him. Officials are already curious about how much gold he moves and where it goes, so M sets Bond on him.

The investigation runs through Kent and Switzerland and across the Atlantic. Goldfinger's associate Oddjob and a wider criminal circle make every approach dangerous, and Bond often has to work in the company of the very man he is trying to expose.

Can I start here?

Yes. It feels self-contained, and its characters are widely known. Starting at book seven means skipping some of Bond's earlier development.

What stands out

Fleming writes at length about golf, cars and the physical business of moving gold. The golf match is a set piece in its own right.
